Code of Ethics
My job as a journalist is to be fair, objective and accurate in my reporting. Every day I come into the newsroom and strive to be those three ideals. But more importantly, I am constantly learning how to be better at those three values. My job is to provide the facts in an informative way so the reader can make decisions to better their daily lives.
Being fair
A fair reporters tells the story, whether with words, videos, pictures, social media updates and design, without bias. While in an ever-increasing age of niche sites evolving technology, a reporter must remain disinterested — but not uninterested — in his or her content.
Being complete
Complete reporting means telling all sides of a story. To achieve this, I'm prepared for my interviews so I have intelligent and informed questions to ask. I will also be listening attentively to my interviewee so I can ask appropriate follow up questions.
This kind of reporting helps build my credibility so sources will learn to trust my writing and my questions. I have learned how to put a bias aside and get to the middle of a story so I can be accurate. It is important to remain objective so the reader is making the informed decision based upon writing and the facts provided with the story.
Being accurate in reporting
Accuracy coincides with fairness. To be accurate, I will do research before going into interviews so I have a concrete understanding of the topic at hand. I will always take the time to properly meet a deadline and never have a story ran if it is not a complete story.
